Sadly I also don’t have the artistic skills that Loki shows in his recently finished Zork LP. I’ve only done one other LP before, so I’m still a bit rough around the edges. So, not only is this Let’s Play an exploration of this classic game, it’s also an attempt to do something I’ve never been able to pull off before. In fact I’ve never made it to the end game at all, but I have gotten the last lousy point… go figure. I also have a confession to make, I have NEVER actually finished the game. The version I’m playing here is the Inform port, it’s a fairly faithful port of the game and keeps the puzzles and items intact.Īs for myself, I’ve been playing Colossal Cave since I was a kid, it was the first text adventure game I ever drew a map for and to be honest I still play it now and again. This was more a limit of the system on which it was written then anything else. The original version of the game understood two words commands (“GO EAST” “TAKE LAMP” and so on). This site also has a lot of game hints so fair warning if you want to go through the LP unspoiled. I’m no expert on the whole thing, but you can find a nice history of the game right over here. The history of the game is rather interesting, including such things as spamming the whole internet, which was much smaller at the time. It’s also the originator of many classic gaming elements, from “XYZZY” to “A maze of twisty little passages, all alike” and the lesser known “A maze of twisty little passages, all different.”
COLOSSAL CAVE HINTS PLUS
The style of writing and game play inspired a lot of people, including a little group at MIT who went on to make a little game called Zork.Ĭolossal Cave, which is also known as ADVENT, Adventure and Colossal Cave Adventure, is really an interesting mix of real locations plus some nice light fantasy elements mixed in. Part of this was due to the fact that the original game was based on a real cave system (not Colossal Cave as you might expect but Bedquilt Cave). While it wasn’t the first game to use text commands it was the first one that used the descriptions to built a visual stunning world. Colossal Cave is the first game that really qualified as a Text Adventure game.
